The course

The Great North Run is a point-to-point half marathon starting on the A167/central motorway in Newcastle, crossing the Tyne Bridge into Gateshead. After a gradual climb between miles 3 and 5 and a downhill stretch to mile 8, the toughest section is the uphill grind from miles 8 to 12. The course then descends to finish along the seafront in South Shields. It is an undulating course with no severe climbs but no truly flat sections either.
