The course
A point-to-point course tracing the legendary 1896 Olympic route from the town of Marathon to Athens. It passes the Tomb of the Marathon warriors and runs near the coast through Nea Makri before climbing steadily from the 10 km mark to about the 31 km mark, the toughest uphill section of any major marathon. After the climb it descends gradually into Athens and finishes inside the marble Panathinaiko (Panathenaic) Stadium.
