The course
The Rio de Janeiro Marathon is a point-to-point course starting at Praia do Pontal in Recreio dos Bandeirantes and finishing at Flamengo Park by the Monument to the Dead of World War II. It follows Rio's Atlantic shoreline east through Barra da Tijuca, São Conrado, Leblon, Ipanema and Copacabana, with views of Sugarloaf Mountain and Christ the Redeemer. The course is mostly flat, with one notable incline on the Avenida Niemeyer coastal road between São Conrado and Leblon.
